The $100 million bond package, approved by voters in November 2017, is getting underway. The AISD Board of Trustees has approved four architect firms to each take a portion of the bond projects and begin the design phase. Projects will be prioritized by need and complexity, and the Board has set an aggressive timeline for construction.

The first actual construction projects, at Fannin Middle School and Lamar Elementary School, are set to begin in November 2018, followed by a package of projects at Coronado and Lee elementary schools and Amarillo and Tascosa high schools. All of the 2017 bond projects are scheduled to begin within the next two years, with the final projects targeted to be complete by summer of 2021.

The bond focuses on four main areas to be addressed: Safety & Security, Classroom Additions, Facility Updates, and Restoration & Replacement.

The district’s aging facilities have been a focus because nearly 80 percent of schools are more than 50 years old.

The 2017 bond package includes enhanced safety and security measures with the addition of school doors with bullet resistant glass and improvements to student drop-off/pick-up areas. The bond also calls for new classroom additions at four schools and facility updates for bathrooms, locker rooms and high school auditoriums.  The bond also includes restoration and replacement of school plumbing and sewer lines, drainage areas, and other basic infrastructure improvements.
